Art has a unique way of connecting us to the world around us. For many, it serves as a form of expression, a way to communicate feelings and experiences that words often fail to capture. As a disabled artist, my journey into the world of acrylic painting has been both challenging and rewarding. It has allowed me to explore nature in ways I never thought possible.

In this blog post, I will share my experiences, techniques, and the joy of creating art inspired by the beauty of the natural world. Whether you are an artist, a nature lover, or someone looking for inspiration, I hope my story resonates with you.

The Beginning of My Artistic Journey

The Beginning of My Artistic Journey

Art has always been a part of me. I did well in GCSE Art, but never felt confident enough to pursue it as a career. Still, creativity found its way into my life—especially when I became a mum. From last-minute school projects to handmade costumes, I loved using my skills to bring joy to my children.

Then, in 2023, everything changed. I became disabled and required spinal surgery. Before the operation, I could barely walk or use my hands for everyday tasks. It was frustrating—but what hurt most was losing the ability to create. That part of me felt silenced.

I faced many challenges, both physical and emotional. But in the quiet moments, I found comfort in nature. The colours, textures, and forms of the natural world spoke to me. They reminded me that creativity doesn’t disappear—it waits patiently to be rediscovered.

One day, I picked up a brush and tried acrylic painting. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colours and the freedom the medium offered. Acrylics gave me a way to reconnect with creativity—something I hadn’t felt in a long time. Through painting, I began expressing my emotions and my love for nature in ways that felt both healing and liberating.

Finding My Style

As I began to paint, I experimented with different techniques. I learned about blending colors, layering, and using various brushes. Each stroke felt like a step closer to capturing the essence of what I saw outside my window.

I often painted landscapes, flowers, and trees. I found that using bold colors helped convey my emotions. For example, a bright blue sky could represent joy, while deep greens could evoke calmness.

Techniques to Try

If you are interested in exploring acrylic painting, here are some techniques that worked for me:

  • Layering: Start with a base color and gradually add layers. This creates depth and richness in your artwork.

  • Blending: Use a wet brush to blend colors together. This technique can create beautiful gradients and soft transitions.

  • Texture: Experiment with different tools, like sponges or palette knives, to add texture to your paintings. This can make your artwork more dynamic.

Nature as My Muse

After working at Bristol Zoo in Clifton for 16 years, nature became my greatest inspiration. During my time there, I took countless photos—capturing moments, textures, and colours that still speak to me today. It was the best job I ever had. I felt a deep connection to the animals, the environment, and the incredible friends I made along the way. We still keep in touch.

That experience shaped how I see the world. It’s why I feel so connected to nature and my surroundings. That connection continues to inspire my art, and one day, I hope to create a collection based on my time at the zoo—a tribute to a place that helped me rediscover myself.

Overcoming Challenges

Creating art as a disabled person comes with its own set of challenges. There are days when my physical limitations make it difficult to hold a brush or stand for long periods. But I’ve learned to adapt. I take regular breaks, and sometimes I have to pause for days before I can finish a piece.

When the pain is at its worst, or when I can’t sleep because of discomfort, I pick up my paintbrush. I immerse myself in the piece I’m creating. In those moments, the pain fades into the background—though I know I’ll have to stop eventually, or I’ll suffer more later. It amazes me that such pain can lead to such beauty.

Embracing Imperfection

One of the most important lessons I have learned is to embrace imperfection. Not every painting will turn out the way I envision it, and that is okay. Each piece is a reflection of my journey and growth as an artist.

When I look at my earlier works, I see how far I have come. Each painting tells a story, and I cherish the memories associated with them.

Connecting with Others

Art has a way of bringing people together. Through my journey, I have connected with other artists and nature enthusiasts. We share tips, techniques, and encouragement.

I have also participated in local art shows, where I showcased my work. Meeting other artists and receiving feedback has been incredibly rewarding. It reminds me that art is not just about the final product, but also about the connections we make along the way.

The Impact of Art on My Life

Art has transformed my life in many ways. It has given me a sense of purpose and a way to express my feelings. Through painting, I have found joy, healing, and a deeper connection to nature.

I often reflect on how far I have come since I first picked up a brush. My journey has not been easy, but it has been worth it. Each painting is a testament to my resilience and passion for art.

Looking Ahead

As I continue my artistic journey, I am excited about what the future holds. I plan to explore new techniques and subjects. I want to challenge myself and push the boundaries of my creativity.

I also hope to inspire others to find their own artistic voice. Whether through painting, drawing, or any other form of art, I believe everyone has a story to tell.

Final Thoughts

Art is a powerful tool for self-expression and connection. My journey as a disabled artist has taught me that creativity knows no bounds. Nature has been my greatest muse, and I encourage everyone to explore the beauty around them.

Whether you are an experienced artist or just starting, remember that your unique perspective is valuable. Embrace your journey, and let your creativity flow.

In the end, it is not just about the art we create, but the experiences and connections we make along the way. So grab your brushes, step outside, and let nature inspire you.
